Update: it's supposed to fallback to .so if .la is missing, but under certain build configurations that code seems to break.

What does this purportedly offer relative to the standard issue dynamic linking and dlopen?

The same thing libtool does but for runtime - puts a broken abstraction layer around the existing clean interfaces (dlopen,
$CC -shared).

Never heard of libltdl -- what uses it? How limited is this damage?
