Now I'm curious how cheap GPS receivers work, since I'm only (somewhat) familiar with the workings of high-precision stuff.

Especially simple for devices that won't be moving about a lot (like a plug charger) that compensate immediate inaccuracy over hours.

A tracking device that only works when someone leaves it plugged in several hours seems like it would have limited usefulness...

You're talking about it as if we were not seeing twenty variants of it for sale. As if it was hypothetical :) It's right there.

I'm skeptical that they work as advertised, especially the cheap ones.

Businesses that market to stalkers are not known for ethical advertising.

It's advertising what the basic functionality for any GPS plugged into a wall indoors at least 1 hr while would've (*any*, as it's basic)

Average person's conception is that GPS gets a fix in <5sec like their phone does. Not after hours of waiting.

Average person's conception of GPS is irrelevant for a tracking device planted on a wall charger, though.

It can tell you where your target spends the night, which is surely one usage case the intended market would be interested in.

But it probably can't tell you where they plugged in at a coffee shop for a quick charge or where they're sitting in the airport.
