There's a point in early boot process where allocation logic is handed off from "memblock" to "bootmem" framework.

If you happen to allocate something with memblock after that handoff, ooops, your allocation never gets permanently recorded.

You'd think there'd be some mechanism to ensure memblock_alloc panics after the handoff, but nope. Happily allocates w/o recording.

Seems silly. But here I am with glibc's dl-minimal vs malloc and similar ugly problems which I think DJ will fix for us.
