Yeah, I do @musllibc, FOSS & infosec stuff. But now is not the time for a mostly-/only-tech Twitter feed.

As for Qualcomm, I don’t want to use any NDA information, but you can see what they provide to OEMs at Code Aurora.https://www.codeaurora.org/projects/all-active-projects/android-msm …

Code Aurora is where QCOM puts the open-source parts of their #Android for MSM (Snapdragon) chips. They supply additional code under NDA.

So if you’re an OEM using Snapdragon chips (or their competitors), you generally have to pay to get updates to their supplied codebase.

My understanding is that this applies to even minor updates, but I don’t know the licensing details, which would be under NDA anyway.

In the case of Nexus 5 & other Snapdragon 800/801 Android phones, QCOM was definitely the limiting factor; nobody wanted to pay for support.

The Nexus 10 is stuck on Android 5.1.1. It uses Samsung Exynos. I don’t know if Samsung has similar policies re: Android driver support.

It’s possible Google didn’t want to update Nexus 10 because the /system partition is nearly full. That’s another reason for lack of updates.

As I mentioned earlier, #Android doesn’t have resizable flash partitions. Many devices, including Motorola Xoom, stopped getting updates…

…from Google simply because the system partition was too full for them. That’s an embarrassing thing to talk about, so Google minimizes it.

BTW, while carrier testing requirements do sometimes interfere with OEMs pushing out updates, that excuse doesn’t work for WiFi tablets.

Carriers have no business having any say in software running on your pocket computer that happens to have a 4G modem as a peripheral.

That's wishful thinking, since they do. At least in the U.S. I'd never be naive about U.S. carriers not being curious.

Right. But it's something which should be argued/fought and which the infosec/anti-malware community should label as malicious.
