Yeah, I do @musllibc, FOSS & infosec stuff. But now is not the time for a mostly-/only-tech Twitter feed.

Intel truly adores crippling their products. Hopefully not the case for the 2k USD 18 core / 36 thread i9-7980XE... https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2017/07/intel-core-i9-fastest-chip-but-too-darn-expensive/ …pic.twitter.com/RyppeALnyL

They seriously expect people to pay 1k USD for a CPU where they were too cheap to solder the heat spreader to the processor... that's awful.

i7-6950X @ 4.4GHz hits 65C building CopperheadOS with *air cooling* with 1.22V, 85C for mprime (AVX2). Next gen CPU is apparently far worse.

i9-7980XE would be fantastic for Android/Chromium builds if they don't cripple the IHS. High clocks are a must have for incremental builds.

For our use case, an i9-7980XE will pay for itself in weeks but it seems insane to peel off the heat spreader from something that pricey...

It was understandable when they made this move for lower-end CPUs but now they're just being ridiculous. Cripple $1000 product to save $2.

Maybe the $1000 product is just the $100 product without a fuse blown? ;-)

Extreme Edition CPUs are in fact unlocked multipler Xeons binned for higher clock speeds but fewer cores with features like ECC disabled.

It makes no *business sense* for them to cripple them like this though. Could add couple $ of solder they used before and charge $250+ more.

If they want to add another letter for the non-crippled version and a price premium so be it, that's how they roll, but they don't offer it.
