If you choose to open source software that you think will be very useful: Hold back features, and get paid by corporations to add them in.

This has worked for musl libc both for me (main author) and other contributors, with results fully FOSS (MIT).

But it's not viable to any of us as a primary source of income. I mainly contract on related things making use of my FOSS work.
