So this time I went with the Moto G4 Plus. So far experience has been all good.

Bootloader unlocking is well-documented by the vendor and there were no surprises. Lineage OS (CM successor) was easy to install.
-
I opted to omit GApps, instead installing microg to replace the missing services and a third-party Play store downloader (Yalp).

Haven't hit anything that doesn't work yet; Youtube, GMail, Google Maps & Translate apps all work fine installed as normal unpriv'd apps.
-
F-Droid covers a lot of the apps I want anyway, though, and does a much better job than Play of showing what's actually free & non-hostile.
