Ohh the irony that boot sectors are writable in Windows to support anti virus software
I assume from the original tweet it was commented/documented by MS that the reason it's not protected is AV-compatibility.

In this document MS says write to boot sectors is allowed because AV software. https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/hardware/dn653576(v=vs.85).aspx …

Allowing AV to maliciously hook into all sorts of core OS functionality has always been a conscious (and utterly wrong) choice by MS.
-
First, we're talking about writable boot sector here, not hooking. Second, you are wrong. Without AV being able to hook, users are less safe
-
Of course you'd say that. You profit selling this snake oil.
-
Actually, no, I'm not selling anything. I work in the academia these days.
-
So you just used to profit off the snake oil. Much better.

Well, I'd like to see some evidence. I've worked at an AV company, we never required it from MS and needed it only during boot disinfection.
