That works in the near term. Only extremely recent devices have stuff like the key attestation API. Can't keep it working reliably though.

SafetyNet doesn't even get updated as an app, and seems like bad idea to rely on pirating their code and bypassing DRM for legal reasons...

Not talking about the app but rather Play Services code and binaries like snet where it's against the terms of the license to do that.

And just because it's free doesn't mean there aren't licensing terms. It's no different than breaking the terms of the GPL, etc.

GPL does not govern (and can't govern) what you can do privately with sw you legally obtained. Only copying/conveying it & deriv works.

The FSF's (original, at least) legal position is (was) that it fundamentally can't - that trying to dictate that is unlawful.

Whether that agrees with modern legal interpretations is a topic I don't want to get dragged into. But it was their position.
