the main remaining use-case for DVD-R's IME is mostly for OS installation media / etc (OS installs from USB drives being problematic).

Never had any problem installing from a usb drive.

probably depends on the OS; recently had a horrible PITA trying to get Win7 installed via USB on a laptop lacking an internal drive...

though, this was for someone else, if it were just me might have just used Linux, as a live-image worked fine over USB (for utility stuff).

note: most people around here are running Win7 (though I run Win10 & Linux). public PCs here still often WinXP+CRTs. 3.5"s not totally dead.

though 3.5's are pretty much on life-support; one sees USB floppy drives sticky-taped onto Win7 machines & 15" CRTs giving way to 15" LCDs.
