I'm seriously considering getting a laptop running Windows as host OS. I want a secure laptop
Suspend to disk should work the same as for internal drives, which was historically bad for Linux but reportedly works now.

My experience tells me that USB resets over suspension which makes it much less reliable...

Alternative would be fde with a hardware token key.

Yeah but the USB disk approach protects you from data loss & loss of use on theft, not just from loss of privacy/control of data/creds.
-
Even if the laptop is lost/stolen you can just buy a new one, enable boot from USB, and be up and running again in 15 minutes.
-
Out of experience I doubt that's going to ever be the case, alas.

I haven't had time to put together such a setup for myself, but I want/plan to before I need to travel again.

I have bought a Chromebook. I plan on using that to cross the US border if they establish the laptop ban. But I have not set up SSH from it.
