We used to just drop a chunk of dry ice in the drink to be carbonated and it worked well enough.
That is a great method but it has three issues: 1. Miscalculating may leave you with a burst PET bottle, which is no fun whatsoever
2. Dry ice evaporates *rapidly*. In PS foam containers it can be kept for at most 1-2 days in a typical room. That's expensive for sodas
3. Dry ice may be dirty depending on how it is produced, I use food-grade CO₂ here that is sure to contain no oil or whatever
