Yeah, I do @musllibc, FOSS & infosec stuff. But now is not the time for a mostly-/only-tech Twitter feed.

      ok, I'm still puzzling over these: https://godbolt.org/g/Z0RIz0  if I understand correctly: f() is unconditional UB, any code is OK

      and g() can be compiled to "return 1" do we know why GCC and LLVM both refuse to exploit this UB?

      g() cannot be 1, I think, unless the implementation-defined size_t -> ptrdiff_t conversion never results in a negative value

      It is ok to make g return 1 all the time because UB would be invoked for every p and offset arguments you are thinking of that'd lead to 0.

      In a related remark, Clang treats it as UB if you pass more than PTRDIFF_MAX to malloc, and can silently miscompile your program if it does.

      No, that's a really bad idea. The guys in this thread are smart; listen to them.

          C is a portable Assembly Language. An optimizer changing its meaning is broken.

          You will need to find someone to make a compiler for that “portable assembly” you speak of. Personally I don't know any.

          Define "better". If you want to program in something other than C, there's plenty of options. There's no excuse for breaking C.

          I mean better than writing a compiler that produces output 100-1000x slower that's useless except as a way to express disagreement w/C.
