Why on earth does Cmake build libcurl without ssl by default???
A per-os-version grid is inherently a failure to do their job. The point is to detect, not assume.

Strongly disagree. Except when running on systems on rolling release, you don't need to detect.

Yes you do because you don't know the system, and new systems will exist by the time someone compiles your software.

Also versions can be very misleading. For ages RH called their Linux 4.x "2.6.x" just to trick sw and/or ppl with bleeding edge allergies.

I agree. Chasing distro version numbers in your builds is not going to make building easier. It would work on Windows and that's all.
