http://libfirm.org is a really promising compiler backend project, codegen comparable to or better than GCC and LLVM in many cases.

FWIW: my codegens tend towards being simplistic designs, usually not relying so much on analysis or cleverness, but peephole & special cases

Yes, cparser (libfirm C frontend) command line is largely gcc compatible.
