Qualcomm's expensive patents on wireless technology are why, it's why an LTE tablet costs $200 more than it's non-LTE version.
Yes, I'm aware the traditionally-non-GSM-based carriers are crap. Not talking about them.

If by crap you mean traditionally have better service then sure, I may not like what they do but even I know Verizon is better than ATT.
-
Not having your phone work anywhere but the US, and not being able to move carriers without buying a new phone, is my idea of crap.
-
I can use my Verizon phone anywhere in the world, and I don't pay a dime extra for it, and I can if I choose move it to ATT.
-
You can insert a SIM card for a carrier that only does 2G and have it work?
-
I just asked myself why I would want to, and myself said: because you don't.
-
btw, you can't even do that with a GSM phone in America, nobody in America that is a large carrier supports 2G still.
-
The carriers don't but any good phone still does.
-
No, no, that's quite the opposite, legacy increases cost, the same cost you were just complaining about.
