Why are tablets so cheap but smartphones so expensive? Is it the patents? Certification with carriers?

And here's one that's obviously made for embedding in computers, even cheaper: https://www.amazon.com/Wireless-DW5804-E371-LTE-3G-01YH12/dp/B0156GGZZG …

I don't see how they can forbid putting it in a pocket-sized computer instead of a large laptop.
-
Licensing restrictions are designed to be messy. If you sell it, you need a new patent licence.
-
Then sell it with a PCIe port and sell the PCIe cards in the same shop.

ATT owns Cricket, they com Huawei, strongarm Qualcomm for near nil patent pricing or threaten to remove tech that makes their patent worthy.
-
But the modem works with any carrier (contrary to the wrong/contradictory info on amazon).
-
The only unlocked part about that modem is it work on ATT/T-Mobile, it won't work on Verizon's LTE, and Verizons modem won't work on ATT
-
Yes, I'm aware the traditionally-non-GSM-based carriers are crap. Not talking about them.
-
If by crap you mean traditionally have better service then sure, I may not like what they do but even I know Verizon is better than ATT.
-
Not having your phone work anywhere but the US, and not being able to move carriers without buying a new phone, is my idea of crap.
-
I can use my Verizon phone anywhere in the world, and I don't pay a dime extra for it, and I can if I choose move it to ATT.
-
You can insert a SIM card for a carrier that only does 2G and have it work?
