Why are tablets so cheap but smartphones so expensive? Is it the patents? Certification with carriers?

Qualcomm's expensive patents on wireless technology are why, it's why an LTE tablet costs $200 more than it's non-LTE version.

In the UK, the Samsung Galaxy Tab A is basically the same price with or without LTE. Qualcomm's markup is only massively inflated in the US.

Results from them being allowed to demand a percentage of a devices price for it's usage, around 7.5% usually. The EU would not allow that.

This is stupid. Most users would happily buy phones that are equiv of tablet + cheap ~$10-20 3g/lte modem. Nobody needs the Qualcomm one.

Why isn't someone doing this and undercutting the crappy market with awesome $200 phones better than flagships in all other ways?

But we're stuck paying $200 extra for the malicious soc based one where the modem can dma over your kernel.
