If you're gonna do a conf talk, I'd rather it be on something only you can do. There are more make people than good C people.

When was the last time you saw someone else doing makefiles that don't suck? If there are others they're hiding well...
-
I think mine are decent, but they don't count: they were inspired from yours.

-
Hey, if you want to give a talk on principles of declarative, use of implicit rules, etc. be my guest.
-
I prefer using my limited visibility to talk about init systems - that's something I can do better than most, which is not true for make!
-
If I was talking about make, it would mostly be advocacy over other build systems for bootstrap reasons.
-
I suspect what you want to say is about good Makefile design; it's a real issue, but moot if everyone uses the latest trendy tool instead.
-
What I want is for people to understand that make has been better at what the latest trendy tools do, for 20+ years, & just gets misused.

How would it compare to the existing literature on make?
-
Not sure; perhaps the main difference would be actually having an audience. (Obviously ppl aren't reading the existing literature on make.)

So aptly named, given my experience with actual plumbers: slow-working, always lacking proper tools, producing inefficient messes, ... :-)
