I would be very concerned if the amount of CPU processing for decompression had crosstalk effects on the sound card's analog output.
Generally it's the cpu going in/out of sleep states that seems to produce the most noticeable noise, so you'd want a 100%-cpu-load codec. ;)
on my old MOBO (desktop PC) I often got random low-intensity hissing/whistling, mostly when "silent"; playing audio would typically fix it.
sort of like sound chip had tinnitus; also audio was worse with original cheap Chinese PSU, but a newer PSU made audio better (less noise).
but one would assume the individual with the $700 headphones is not using a crappy unshielded DAC
