The theory is they're trying to create artificial scarcity ala gmail invites back in the day. (Which google tried to repeat for google+.)
I'm assuming from that fact that the flagship instance is still closed-for-signup that mastondon is dead already?

Do they even have invites? Don't seem to... It's just closed and they suggest you register on some rando's instance instead...
-
Which is an epic privacy fail, especially at the same time fraudulent VPN/privacy services are springing up all over...
-
your twitter account is open. What are the randos gaining exactly?
-
The point is wanting something better overall, not just marginally better in a couple minor ways, same or worse overall.

It had a bit of a surge - but the OStatus network has been around for years now. Not going away anytime soon it appears :)
-
It's not a question of going away but how you trust with your data.
-
Ah, I thought you were making a statement about the hype of mastodon being over.
-
Well, I mean the hype is rather a letdown if you're stuck repeating bad practices from commercial social networking.

they did that on purpose in order to prevent it from becoming de-facto centralized around that instance
-
Uhg. So trusting randos is better than de-facto centralized? Or do they expect everyone to run their own instances?
-
This seems like epic mismanagement/cluelessness about the issues a social network needs to get right to be better than the commercial ones.
-
i mean i don't disagree with you
