Looking at Linux video editors. KDEnlive wants to install 124 packages (the whole of KDE, including web browser). Never happening.
They're all so awful, but w/the right framework/infrastructure could be awesome. I tried solving this problem in 2005 or so, got frustrated.

Got screen capture to work: vlc->open capture device, select "desktop", set FPS, show more options, play another media, enter "alsa://"...

Then pulldown next to convert/save, select convert, enter destination filename (specifying .mp4 extension), and THEN hit start.

Editing video with VLC involves saving snippets as separate files and then gluing them back together again, but would at least #*%(&# _work_

If you transcode to intra-only mpeg1/2 you can edit with dd/cat... :-)
