No. That's not good advice, sorry. Open Source unfortunately is not more secure; just much less well defended.

It also looks like you missed the "in a vm" part. Could even do win-in-win vm if you insist it's more secure but IMO that's a mis-assessment

Yes, practicality of vm adoption is a big limitation of this "advice". But something like Qubes might work.
