Why can't we get synthetic sapphire eyeglasses? Abbe number 72.2 (!!!!) and high index of refraction.

Yes. You know the blue-circled red "open" signs? Viewed through side of lens, the word "open" is outside the circle.

Looking at one irl, or that image? Wavelengths are not remotely the same between monitor rgb reproduction & actual sign.

Also distance/focal depth may affect it. Not sure, would have to work it out.
