hardware hackers: what board should I buy as a beginner to FPGA programming?
Depends on if you want an FPGA as a coprocessor for a system with hard cpu, or to stand on its own independent of cpu (or w/ soft cpu).

Making my own cpu would be really nice but won't obviously start that way. Looks like mojo v3 has USB + many GPIOs
