To be clear; there are many shady VPNs—especially the "free" ones—but if this becomes law, house wifi should be treated like hotel wifi.

Indeed; I am hoping someone (
@consumerreports ?) will actually do a list of more trustworthy VPNs. Many are scams.https://twitter.com/marypcbuk/status/844972738511093760 …zeynep tufekci added,

So, the law passed. For VPNs recs: the three I heard most about were:
@getcloak@theTunnelBear (PAID) and@FreedomeVPN. Don't use free ones.14 replies 145 retweets 203 likes -

Unfortunately, none of them are audited. Many VPNs are scams—a huge privacy risk. Making recs based on best available but incomplete info.

To recap: Don't use free VPNs. Don't ask Google—some top results are scams. Their business model is to scam you or obliterate your privacy.

And there's no excuse. It would be so easy to pay a few people to manually search scam-vulnerable keywords & permaban all scam hits.

The problem is that they see a marketing value in an absolutist "we don't manually remove results" position.
