Intel Optane SSD (3D XPoint memory) is a great step forward, but currently appears to make little difference vs. other SSDs for yescrypt ROM

Per specs, Optane's IOPS at 4 KB random read is same as other fastest SSDs' - yes, at lower queue depth, but doesn't matter for yescrypt ROM

Byte-addressable is most important for writes; there may also be a smaller speedup for reads smaller than a page or/& crossing page boundary

No(?) published Optane benchmarks for smaller than 4 KB and/or odd-sized/misaligned random reads yet. If anyone has such data, please share.

I believe this is mostly addressable with RAM-backed intermediate buffers, like on HDD/SSDs.

If your guess is right, then the "byte-addressing" will provide no speed improvement for smaller than page/unaligned reads at all

I don't think buffers can help truly random byte-addressed reads.
