Every time somebody says “I don’t need the compiler to do optimizations, I write fast code already” I ask if they’ve ever written “x / 3”.

They're there to keep people from writing idiotic unmaintainable code in the pursuit of having it be fast.

Exactly what I’ve been trying to say all along; you put it better than I did. :) Optimizations are abstraction enablers.
