With 2TB SSDs clocking in at 1.5k USD, your data may not fit in RAM, but it will probably fit into an SSD-backed memory-mapped file.
A 2TB raid0 of usb3 thumb drives costs just ~$500 w/fairly close performance.

IME it's about the same as decent eMMC in modern laptops. I used Samsung drives.
