in nixpkgs we use http://zlib.net/fossils and it seems to work. Have you tried that one?

they actually seem to _move_ files from one to the other. Unfriendly so you can't get latest version from /fossils. We fallback

PS if you use zlib you are breaking strict aliasing rules :)

It's okay, b/c GNU C is the One True C, and gcc is the One True C Compiler :D!

GCC did not promise not to break programs that break strict aliasing, in fact promised it would break them given the opportunity.

http://snapshot.debian.org perhaps? It stores everything that was ever uploaded to Debian (incl. pristine sources, most times).

“Most times” == pristine tarballs are used unless they were repackaged to strip nonfree material, which I believe is still rare.
