yeah, in Quake's case it is a slight gunge/grain but also a slight "warmness"; the dynamic calc's are more clean/cold/gray.

basically, I have gone and made a version of Quake using a SW renderer internally rendering using 16-bit packed-YUV (vs 8-bpp).
