I suspect you actually need some nontrivial DSP work to get the necessary response time without frequent false-positives.

And if you got frequent false positives, users would disable the safety system as too-annoying.

it's pretty invasive so a false positive is basically unacceptable. still have to be able to distinguish finger from 2x4.

In the case of this saw, BTW, the safety must be turned off for certain materials. For instance, wood not fully dried.
