IOW, the only valuable part of autoconf is the well-known ./configure ... && make && make install idiom.

most programs that use autoconf only seem to actually build for glibc/Linux now. Original portability function long since lost.

It's really not. The GNU coding standards actually contain a decent spec of the public interface, independent of the implementation.

By public interface I mean the interface with the configure-invoking user/process, not with the software being compiled.
