I feel this way about many well-scoped projects or ones based on strong standardization. For example, I feel locked-into DNS.
But if you haven't thought about "what happens to our users if we go under?" or "...if we get bought by bad people?" ...

This is why I prefer open and/or mature spaces with strong competition. For example I can move from Heroku to App Engine.

Both platforms are considered to have really strong "lock-in", but because of strong competition I have an easy off-ramp.

Who has owns the responsibility? The producer; the consumer? Many don't understand the tradeoff, we might be assuming too much.

My worldview on business is that, when you run a business, you take on responsibility for its impacts on the world.

This I agree with, but some companies don't understand how to build or create open solutions; and is that a requirement?

Open has it's benefits. The problem is, not everyone understands how to be "open" in a way that everyone would agree with.
