Problem with binutils is that http://ld.gold exists so there isn't enough incentive to work on http://lld.llvm.org/ .

If there was only ld.bfd, there would already be viable alternatively to it. lld has better Windows support than Linux atm.

That's not surprising. LLVM project is full of Windows- and Apple-think. :-(

A good linker replacement would work natively in ELF, in-place via mmap for most work, and use sep. conv. pass for legacy fmts

The COFF and ELF linkers are totally separate with a common library and it appears to use mmap heavily: https://github.com/llvm-mirror/lld/tree/master/ELF ….

It's a tiny project compared to binutils too. COFF support is done but the only people that care about ELF seem to be BSD folks.
