Yes, its a bit obtuse, but i think LANG=C is a bit easier to remember than LC_ALL=C

It's also broken; it doesn't do anything if LC_COLLATE or LC_ALL is set in the environment.

Unfortunately doing it right is hard. Set LC_COLLATE=C if LC_ALL is not set, but if LC_ALL is set...

...then you have to manually copy the value of LC_ALL to LC_*, unset LC_ALL, and set LC_COLLATE...
