How many people saying Gmail is more secure than anything you could host yourself have tried exploiting any Linux/x86_64 remotes recently?
The main reason gmail is more secure than anything else is that when you email other gmail users, mail never leaves google.

It may be hard to root the server, but it's easy to intercept mail (even if "just metadata") sent/received in the clear.

AFAIK all traffic between Google's data centers is encrypted now if it wasn't then. Who reported it wasn't before?
