Yeah, I do @musllibc, FOSS & infosec stuff. But now is not the time for a mostly-/only-tech Twitter feed.

Remember when they were saying 56 bit keys were beyond the reach of NSA?https://twitter.com/hashcat/status/770649376955990016 …

hashcat now supports raw DES cracking (KPA), doing 20Gk/s per GTX1080. IOW: Cracks every DES key in 80 hours average on a $5000 PC.

In particular, a practical $5K DES cracker shows the futility of trying to find an "optimal" crypto key size that only a gov't can crack.

Whatever the key cracking economics are today, just wait a few years. Crypto strength is basically everyone or no one. No middle ground.

Only vast orders of magnitude make any difference. 1024x practical or 65536x practical is still practical.

and 65536 x practical = practical within a decade or two.

You're too generous. If $5k can do it now, $327M can to 65536x now.

Factor between practical vs safe should be more like 2^48 min, pref 2^64 or 2^128.

Basically, unless you can calculate that no one will EVER do it, everyone eventually will be able to.

Exactly. And not just "eventually" but "sooner than you expected". :-)
