note that netguard hosts file blocking requires you install the apk from github + download hosts file

You can have browser ad-blocking but not for Chromium at the moment. Full system stuff is planned but not yet implemented.

A dynamic equivalent to a hosts file is too unfriendly for regular users. No simple indication / override for false positives.

It would be really nice if Chromium supported extensions. It can't be that hard to get it working but it's too far out of scope.

If Google did it, they would probably use an implementation that's broken without Play Services since it uses a Google service.

Their policy about Google services on Android seems to be that they must require Play. Safe browsing, sync, etc. are like that.
