It's the end of the road for Nexus 5 support now that Android Nougat is being released. At most there are going to be some security updates.

What device would you recommend for buying a new phone (for use with Copperhead or other non-vendor-provided dists)?

It only makes sense to buy a Nexus 5X or 6P right now, but there will be a new generation of Nexus devices coming out very soon.

For some perspective: Nexus 5 had guaranteed upgrades until October 2015 (2y) and security updates until October 2016 (3y).

The comparable guarantees for the 5X and 6P are September 2017 for OS upgrades and September 2018 for security updates.

It's possible that they'll support for the Nexus 5 for another year or two with security updates but guarantee ends in October.

For the past year, regular Nexus 5 support have already been over but there are only major OS upgrades once a year anyway.

It's likely that there will be at least one new device in the next few months though, and that should tank the 5X and 6P prices.

Thanks! Maybe I'll see if I can wait for 6P price to drop.
