So, using letsencrypt.sh was a mistake... something caused it to start crashing bash deep inside undebuggable bashisms. :-(
Switching to acme-tiny wasn't hard once I figured out the glue I had to script for it, though, and now it's working well.

I'm pretty sure the failure was something local in the script. Crash was after first domain req, before saving or subsequent ones
