random idle thought: buy large (NEMA 42 stepper), put it in EV, ride around on it. quick checks imply it may work (sufficient torque/RPM).
If you go with one at each drive wheel (no mechanical transmission/differential) you could also get by with ~1/2 power at each.

For modding an existing car, tho, suspension might depend on axle to differential. :-(

these steppers wont quite have enough torque to support direct-drive. would still need a transmission or chain drive for this.

a relatively high RPM (3-6k RPM) could be achieved via around a 120-200V driver-voltage (probably w/ 240V battery bank).

going and simulating: inductance is a serious problem. would at-best need to rewire/rewind the motor, and stay below ~ 1mH.
