@spun_off is there a way to make gcc trap when it falls off the end of a fn? their behavior wrt PR28236 is idiotic.
enum constants aren't so bad if you just use them as integers but don't use the enum type.

well. no. that just throws type safety out the window. use `enum class` with an explicit integer type.
