Yeah, I do @musllibc, FOSS & infosec stuff. But now is not the time for a mostly-/only-tech Twitter feed.

something i encounter a lot lately is very complicated code by programmers who take pride in their ability to do things simple

what they mean specifically is "the mean path between any two moving parts is short", which also means there are few moving parts

however, the parts are intermeshed to the degree that changing anything tingles a never-ending cascade of dependencies

this is fascinating because splitting a problem into many decoupled parts, each doing one small isolated thing, is basically Unix. but.

as anyone who's ever debugged Unix problems knows, Unix is *also* complicated, and rather fragile, and this is *because* it has many parts

fragile, but easier to fix when it breaks, ime

lemme put it this way: in a well-designed system, the systemd debacle *would not exist*. it would be irrelevant

one reason people love systemd is that it brings many moving parts under an umbrella of the same organization

which is good precisely because they can now be managed together

The problem is that the one organization in question (fd.o) is grossly incompetent & hostile to implementation diversity.

"implementation diversity" is the cause of problems of free desktop. it is not a desirable thing.

Anything without at least 2 working implementations is at best a toy. Indicates failure to separate interface/impl.

yeah, OS X's, Android's, iOS's GUIs are definitely "a toy"

From a standpoint of long-term value, they are toys. Only from a get-rich-quick app-store standpoint do they have value.

your definition of what's not a "toy" is so divorced from reality as to be meaningless
