like you can actually cross-compile a tree of projects with cmake without fucking with intermediate ./configure

Indeed. And CMake doesn't detect anything. It just has a huge set of (wrong) hard-coded rules.

There's really nothing you need configure or CMake for. make can do it all just fine.
