Much advice around Android security is just "Buy a Nexus", which is great if you can afford (a) to buy one and (b) replace it every 2 years

@RichFelker@FrozenFire I think the average phone (taken worldwide) *has* a crap screen -
@mjg59@RichFelker@FrozenFire The average Android smartphone in the US is $300, which is the price of a brand new Nexus 5X from Amazon. -
@mjg59@RichFelker@FrozenFire There's already https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Android_One … for the developing world. They're going to be better off than the US. -
@mjg59@RichFelker@FrozenFire Google is managing Android quite differently in new markets. Existing markets can only be fixed by users. -
@mjg59@RichFelker@FrozenFire Since it's highly unlikely that Google is going to risk alienating partners by forcing them to do updates. -
@mjg59@RichFelker@FrozenFire They certainly can via the Google Play licensing (with the risk of companies abandoning Play) but they won't.

@mjg59@FrozenFire I think you could aim for 50-75% price of a current low-end iPhone, high-end presentation, and still get mass adoption. -
@RichFelker@FrozenFire I'm not saying we *only* need a low-end device, just that ignoring the bottom end of the market hurts people -
@mjg59@FrozenFire I agree, but I doubt you could reach significant low-end market share without _also_ being attractive in other aspects. -
@mjg59@FrozenFire That seems doable to me at maybe $100 but not $50. Remember you don't have preinstalled malware subsidizing you. :-P
