TIL $COLUMNS is supposed to take precedence over auto-detected term size, but most apps do opposite b/c bash wrongly sets $COLUMNS for you.

Not quite as bad as I thought: they don't export it by default; it's just set as a shell var. Still apps seem to ignore it...

@sortiecat If you read the text it makes sense. It's so you can prepare output in fixed format independent of your terminal. e.g. 80-col ls
