Yeah, I do @musllibc, FOSS & infosec stuff. But now is not the time for a mostly-/only-tech Twitter feed.

Using Alpine with Docker seems like its really convenient, but I am constantly butting heads with it. No glibc, different cli tools, etc.

It chases the ideal of having “tiny docker images” but sacrifices ideal of “actually working without me spending weeks on shit”

This tweet storm was bought to you by me spending 3 hours today to figure out this one character patch: https://github.com/bermi/sauce-connect-launcher/pull/78 …

@unserkaiser sadly Alpine Linux doesn’t come with man. They strip pretty much everything out 😩

@Keithamus yeah, but you can look them up on the internets. I anyway rip off anything that can be done at the end of a RUN statement.

@unserkaiser The problem here is that Alpine Linux comes with a different tar to GNU tar. It comes with a “compatible” one. Note the quotes

@Keithamus @unserkaiser It uses busybox. You can install the GNU tar package if you want though.

@RichFelker @unserkaiser Aye, figured that out now. Sadly the thing I was untarring depends on glibc so I gave up and used debian

@unserkaiser @RichFelker To be fair to Alpine Linux - it’s got a pretty big warning sticker saying “This uses musl, not glibc!”.

@Keithamus @RichFelker gladly people seem to like fixing code to work with Alpine it seems so far.

@unserkaiser @RichFelker Yes. It’s taking some real time, but hopefully we’ll see people relying less on glibc so alpine is usable!

@Keithamus @unserkaiser Busybox can also be built with better options so 'z' isn't needed. I should request that change...
