@RichFelker yes, that transformation would be invalid, but it would make an obscure bug that could remain unnoticed for a few versions.
@RichFelker Conversely if compilers do not have that bug, that means they cannot be relied on to eliminate n from “for(…; …; p++, n--)”.
@spun_off Sure they can. Just use != instead of <.
@RichFelker @spun_off It seems gcc indeed optimizes it into != when the increment is 1 but not clang or when the increment > 1.
