"The U.S. has never been enthusiastic about trains." I mean, I can think of a time when we were, but mostly because we got them cheap
@FioraAeterna @vogon The AAA estimate seems bogus; presumably it assumes buying a car new or near-new.

@FioraAeterna@vogon For my own driving expenses I estimate about 5 cents per mile in gas and another 2 cents or so for maintenance. -
@RichFelker@FioraAeterna@vogon insurance, registration, cost of vehicle? Insurance and registration were 10c/mi for me last year. -
@stephentyrone@FioraAeterna@vogon That would be about another 3¢ for me at 10k mi or 6¢ at 5k mi. -
@RichFelker@stephentyrone@vogon $300/year?! where the heck do you get your insurance -
@FioraAeterna@stephentyrone@vogon Geico in VA. -
@RichFelker@stephentyrone@vogon Even if I only insure myself (not my roommate), Geico's quote machine gives me $100/month -
@FioraAeterna@stephentyrone@vogon You have to pay 6 months for decent price. It's $(N-epsilon) per month or$N twice a year. -
@RichFelker@stephentyrone@vogon That's the 6-month rate.

@FioraAeterna@RichFelker@vogon If you're driving cross-country, the cost per mile is significantly lower (fixed costs get amortized). -
@FioraAeterna@RichFelker@vogon and cruising 75 mph on highway is a lot easier on mechanical systems than commuting in traffic.
